FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OVER $245,000 IN GRANTS TO BE AWARDED TO AREA AGENCIES SERVING WOMEN AND GIRLS

This Wednesday, January 16, at the Marriott Southpoint, the Women's Giving Alliance, an initiative of The Community Foundation will award over $245,000 in grants to Northeast Florida agencies serving women and girls. Grant recipients, and members of the WGA leadership, will be available for interviews at 1:30 p.m. at the Marriott. Or, at a later time convenient for you.

Three new major grant initiatives are based on critical community concerns that coincide with local and state activities. Grant recipients are:

  • Jewish Family & Community Services, $40,000, for a pilot program for girls aging out of foster care. The program will serve 40 girls ages 13 to 18 in Duval County. At the age of 13, children are seldom adopted. When they reach 18 or 19, they are no longer wards of the state, but do not have the material or emotional support necessary to become productive citizens.
  • Northeast Florida Healthy Start Coalition, $38,050 for its Azalea Project, which seeks to prevent substance abuse and STD/HIV among Duval County women of childbearing age. Azalea is a storefront project in the middle of its target audience: at-risk African-American women and girls ages 15 to 44.
  • Children's Campaign, Inc., a two-year $80,000 grant to support "Justice for Girls: Duval County Reform Initiative." This will be Florida's first comprehensive county-wide system plan to stem the tide of girls entering, or further penetrating, the juvenile justice system and dramatically improve outcomes. Total cost of this program is $180,000. Partnership funding has been committed by The Community Foundation, WGA founders and presidents, and the Jessie Ball duPont Fund.

Continuing Funding is going to:

  • Cathedral Arts Project, $10,000; Jacksonville Women's Business Center, $15,000; Betty Griffin House Rape Crisis Unit in St. John's County, $20,000; Women's Center of Jacksonville, $20,000; Reed Educational Campus, $23,300
